ARA'S JOURNAL

10TH QUARNELLA 412 CE

I did two things today that brought me closer to normal.

First, I practiced. Before this morning, I had not picked up Ilia since Nole left. After so long, I was not sure what it would be like to train without my partner. But I woke up with this need in my heart to both do something active and hit the bloody hell out of something.

My fire was almost doused when I picked up my sword from the chest to find a blank spot where Eona was supposed to be. The dousing of the urge was nearly crippling, and I think I stood still, frozen for what felt like hours. I eventually pushed through and swung at our practice dummy if only for a little while. I at least have a little more energy. I'm trying not to think that the wooden dummy will be my last sparring partner.

Second, I returned to the Council today. Darci had been pushing me for days to return to my post. She said that the only way I would begin to feel better was to go back to helping people. She was usually right on these matters.

The King held a meeting to discuss a proposal by the Master Builder to repair the Capitol’s roads. In the older parts of the city, the roads had begun to crack and crumble. More than one merchant’s carts have been claimed by the treacherous path. It felt surprisingly good to return as the Liaison to the People and promote the word of the citizens. I mainly fought with Colian who did not want to increase spending. I hopefully made him see that we have many former soldiers who would find good work on the project. I hope he learns to think more about his people when he becomes King.

I left the meeting with enough strength to face something that I had put off for too long: I read Nole's unopened correspondences. I think due to the slow travel of news this is something that I will have to deal with for quite some time.

Mostly they were letters of simple pleasantries. People in his network that wished not to be forgotten. I replied to each with a gentle update. I have come to terms that my additional role is now to break the news and comfort people who do not yet know.

I opened a few notes that were sent by some who work for Nole. Updates on movement of local armies, changes to common trade routes, updates on the goings-on of specific individuals. All things that needed to be known, and so I forwarded them along to the proper people.

I held on to one note. Eugnes, of all people, wrote to Nole and excitedly told him of his latest work. Something about working in a Tothian clock tower. Nole thinks he is working on some sort of weapon for the Kildares. I love Eugnes, but sometimes he lives with his head in the clouds.

I miss that man.
